Mo Hayder has a new one coming out on April 27th. Christine Brown kindly offered to read the advance copy and share her thoughts on this exciting book:
DI Jack Caffery and Flea Marley return in Skin by Mo Hayder, part of the Walking Man series. Caffery is investigating the apparent suicide of a young woman found in the countryside near Bristol. He is not convinced that she died by her own hand and grows increasingly uneasy as he gets closer to identifying the motive and identity of the person involved in her death. Could a Tokoloshe be haunting Jack in search of human skin?
Meanwhile, Flea Marley, a police diver who works with Jack, is involved in a search and investigation for another suspicious death. Flea also makes a shocking discovery involving her brother Thom and goes beyond the realm of sisterly devotion to conceal it.
Hayder’s writing tends towards the gruesome and is not for the faint of heart. The story unfolds at a tantalizingly slow pace – perhaps too slow at times. Her characters, Caffery and Marley, each want to do right by the people they love and yet are unable to gain closure or relief by doing so. Could these two damaged people possibly find comfort with each other? I look forward to Hayder’s next book to see what develops.
