they make pretty books, too

Great stuff in NYRB this time around.
Clare Messud on Andrew O'Hagan (two of my current favourites) and Messud's new book is out in paper.

Also, Francisco Goldman on Roberto Bolano. We still haven't seen the new book yet, but reviews have been uniformly positive.

I've just been reading both
Emperor's Children and The Last Life. Both made me wish I knew more about what makes a book work and what doesn't. I felt that I nearly thought both were great, but not quite. There is a lot of narrating in both, and there is something about the elitism of the characters in Emperor's Children that was a turnoff. Yet I'll read the next one, I'm sure.
